Description

Fine buff stoneware covered urn with moulded decoration under crackled ivory glaze.
The lid features a lotus petal design topped with a lotus bud grip. The ivory glaze forms a fine network of crackles that takes on a green hue in the hollows.

A Vietnamese innovation, these jars originated under the Ly, contained drinks, water or wine. They were prized as early as the 17th century as ancient jars by the Japanese who used them to hold fresh water during the tea ceremony (1).

Restoration with kintsugi gold lacquer.
